Report on the talk session by IEEE SPS Kerala Chapter on “Applications of Digital Signal Processing” held at CET on 19.10.17

This session held on October 19, 2017 had a turnout of 40 participants from various colleges. It began at 4:15 pm with the welcome address by Prof. (Dr.) K.C Raveendranathan. This was followed by Shri. B Ramani addressing the gathering. He gave a brief idea of the work currently being carried out at Centre for Development of Advanced Computing and the prospects and opportunities of getting internships there.
He continued to elaborate on the wide spectrum of applications of digital signal processing, explaining how CDAC carries out several of them. Some of the applications mentioned include Vehicle mounted acoustic mine detection systems, acoustic vector sensor systems, a recent project of CDAC-Ultrasonic Diameter Measuring Systems, MRI processing, the multi SHARC board for strategic applications, Sonic Ultrasonic NDT systems, “TARANG”-a digital programmable hearing aid ;its applications and advantages, a 3D visualization tool SRISTI, seizure prevention systems etc. to mention a few.
Afterwards, the speaker was given a memento on behalf of the SPS Chapter IEEE SB CET as a token of respect and appreciation. This greatly interactive session came to an end by 5:20pm with everyone rising and standing in attention for the national anthem. Refreshments and certificates were provided to all participants.

IEEE DAY Celebrations

The IEEE Day 2016 was celebrated all over the world with the motto “ Leveraging Technology For A Better Tomorrow”. IEEE Kerala Section celebrated the IEEE Day by organising a torch run from Kasargod to Trivandrum covering 700 km in 8 days. The torch run reached CET on October 3rd marking the celebrations in the college. The torch run was accompanied by Chairman IEEE Day Celebrations Mr. Bibin Parukoor Thomas, IEEE Kerala Section Secretary Ms. Sarada Jayakrishnan, IEEE Kerala section Membership Development team Chairman Mr. Renjith R Nair , Student Activities Committee Member Mr. Sabarinath Pillai and other Kerala Section Execom members. The event was also conducted in the presence of Mr. Shajahan E.S., Branch Councillor IEEE SB CET. The event commenced with the talk by Ms. Sarada and followed by Mr. Bibin Parukoor who emphasized on the importance of IEEE day Celebrations. The event culminated with the torch lighting and handing it over to IEEE SB CET Chairperson Pooja M. by Ms. Sarada .

Mock Placement 2016

The Mock Placement’16 was organised by IEEE SB CET for the second year students to expose them to the placement process and thus guide and equip them better for the campus recruitment. The preliminary round saw a footfall of 55 enthusiastic youngsters who were shorted down to 20 who moved on to the next round of group discussion. A variety of topics were discussed on and finally 10 competent contestants were selected for the final interview round conducted by fourth year IEEE members. Finally, Amrith M of Computer Science Department  and Dakshina of Applied Electronics and Instrumentation emerged the winners.

SPARK 2k16

“Spark” 2016, aimed to “Inspire, Ignite and Innovate” the school students across the city, was conducted by IEEE SB CET, on August 13, at College of Engineering, Trivandrum. The event, which was conducted with an intention to introduce the students to the world of engineering and help them decide whether they should aspire to engineering, was the first of its kind in the city.

REGISTRATION & INAUGURATION

The inaugural session was graced by the presence of Mrs Srilakshmi, Computer Science HOD.  Shahjahan Sir, IEEE SB Councillor, Pooja, IEEE SB Chair were also present. The inaugural session commenced with the welcome speech by Pooja and IEEE code of ethics pledge, read out by Aarya. The presidential address was delivered by Mrs Srilakshmi. The inaugural session concluded with the Vote of Thanks by Shahjahan Sir.

VIDEO PRESENTATION

The inaugural session was followed by a video presentation session handled by Kevin, Amrith and Saharsh. The participants were presented with various videos on aeronautics, robotics and artificial intelligence. Videos on automation, gaming and robotics opened up the world of technology to the students.

SESSION BY Dr Babu Paul IAS

“Spark” 2016 was graced by the presence of Dr Babu Paul IAS, whose interactive session with the students followed. He started his session by pointing out the importance of mother tongue, Malayalam, and urged the students to be proud about being a Malayalee. He pointed out the importance of being systematic and requested the students to keep in touch with what’s happening all over the world, by reading newspapers.

WORKSHOP VISITS

The students were taken to the Heat Engines Workshop and Mechanical Workshop. Students were interested to see different types of engines, compressors and were curious to know about their working.

TREASURE HUNT

The participants were divided into groups of 10. There were 20 groups in total. A mentor was assigned to each group. The groups were given a set of clues. They had to solve each clue which led them to a particular location on the college campus which is spread across 120 acres.

CLOSING SESSION

In the end, the much awaited results of the Treasure Hunt were announced. The winners were presented with book coupons sponsored by H&C Bookstore, and Snickers, by Kiran Rajmohan, ex-CET IEEE SB Chair. All participants were provided with certificates and the event came to a conclusion.

Aura 2K16

Aura 2k16 was a one day camp for freshers held on 30th January 2016 at ECE seminar hall CET. The event was to conducted as a networking opportunity for them.

Ice breaker session was handled by Pooja. There was session on game development by Gopi Krishnan (YP). During the ice breaker they were divided into groups and were asked to present a Skit on ‘Ideal University’. There was a networking lunch break. After that an infotainment treasure hunt was organized. They participated as the earlier formed team. The event ended with an ice cream party.

IEEE INTERNATIONAL WORKSHOP ON INTERNET OF THINGS AND SMART CITIES,2016

The IEEE International Workshop on Internet of Things and Smart Cities (IW-IoTSC) was held at College of Engineering Trivandrum from January 5 to 6 January 2016. It was a 2 day technical workshop which introduced participants to the intricacies of the IoT devices.This was followed by a Rapid Prototyping Session to provide a hands on experience for the participants.The event was held in association with Future Tech Labs.

To bring together key players in IoT and Smart City domains into a platform to examine key and critical innovations in IoT and Smart City initiatives.
