Web Development with Drupal

IEEE COMSOC Student Chapter of CET along with IEEE SB Younus College of Engineering conducted a workshop on “Web Development with Drupal” by Zyxware Technologies,  Trivandrum as part of Student Technical Awareness Conference (STAC) in Hub1.

Drupal is a free and open source content management system and content management framework package that allows you to easily organize, manage and publish your content, with an endless variety of customization. It is maintained and developed by a community of 630,000+ users and developers.

The workshop was a huge success as the number of students participated exceeded the capacity of the lab. The online registration process had a good positive response which started on 4th August and closed a week before the event. About 50 students registered online and 41 students actually attended the workshop. Students from College of Engineering Trivandrum, Younus College of Engineering, Sree Chithira Thirunal College of Engineering, University College of Engineering Kariyavattom and Department of Computer Science, University of Kerala attended the workshop.

It was a purely technical hands-on Workshop. The Drupal platform is being increasingly used for constructing websites and web development and there are profound opportunities for students to work on internships and projects. Having the knowledge of Drupal will help students in their projects.

Morning session

The session began at 9.30am. After the registration the participants were allotted a computer. An introductory session on Drupal was held by by Nikhil Nambiar, Software Engineer from Society for Promotion of Alternative Computing and Employement (SPACE). The participants were taught how to install Drupal in a local server. They were familiarized with different elements of Drupal like Modules, Contents, Site Building etc.

Afternoon session

In the afternoon session, participants explored Drupal in detail and dealt with site configuration and site management. The participants were given an assignment to create a website. The way everyone completed the work, proved how useful the workshop was. By the end of the afternoon session the participants were in a position to create and manage a website.

Evening session

The evening session was enlightened by Anoop John,CTO of Zyxware technologies with a brief introduction to Drupal development and programming with PHP. He is an Alumni of College of Engineering Trivandrum. He explained the Drupal internal architecture, fundamental concepts and workflows implemented in Drupal. He talked about the paths available for a student willing to work in Drupal development and gave useful tips. The session was very interactive and thought provoking. An interaction with someone like him who is so much familiar with development needs turned out to be very fruitful and motivating for the participants.

The workshop got over by 5 pm. The participants had a discussion on forming groups to work on Drupal and on future programs related to Drupal.

Hands behind the scene

The program was jointly organized by IEEE COMSOC student chapter CET and IEEE Student Branch of Younus College of Engineering with the support of Students of Department of Computer Science and Engineering, CET .
