HUB1 WIE Congress 2011

HUB 1 WIE kick-started its events for the year 2011 with the HUB 1 WIE congress held at College of Engineering ,Trivandrum on 20th March 2011.The event drew a big response with the participation of 48 WIE members, the girls claiming a majority with a 4:1 ratio. The event witnessed the participation from 7 SBs of the HUB. The core theme of the event was “Empowering Women, Fostering technical innovation” and the focus was on bringing people together for a technical cause and nurturing their professional growth. The event was graced with the presence of eminent dignitaries like Smt Shanti.K.J, WIE Chair, Kerala Section, Mr Rajesh Kannan, Counsellor, Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeedam, Mr Ranjit R Nair, GOLD Treasurer, Kerala Section and Ms Bhavna S N, WIE Coordinator, LINK. The event stood by its theme and was a grand success.


Inaugural Ceremony

The inauguration commenced with a short prayer. The IEEE code of ethics was rendered by Amita Prabhakaran , Joint Secretary ,IEEE SB CET. The welcome address was delivered by Sandhra Jose, WIE Chair, SB CET followed by the presidential address by Alka Isac , HUB 1, WIE Representative. The function was formally inaugurated by Smt. Shanti K J by lighting the ceremonial lamp. In her inaugural speech she shared with the crowd her personal experiences and cited the hurdles that women confront in their professional career .Mr Rajesh Kannan addressed the gathering highlighting the importance of education. The ceremony concluded with the vote of thanks by Harsha S, Newsletter Editor, SBCET.

WIE Awareness Session

The WIE activities for the year were aptly flagged off with an awareness session on WIE by WIE coordinator , LINK, Ms Bhavna S N. She captured the attention of the audience by emphasising on the ‘Power of SHE’. She brought to their notice the pool of opportunities awaiting young WIE volunteers. The session was replete with all the necessary details of WIE and its benefit.


Informal Session


A short informal was organised to serve as an icebreaking session where many among the crowd went on stage and exhibited their talents. Dumb charade was also conducted. The participants were also provided with an informal questionnaire for which they were to come up with wacky answers.


Technical Talk-USB

A technical talk on USB was handled by Mr Rajesh Kannan. He began by highlighting the need for USB by stating the disadvantages of serial port and parallel port. He spoke about the architectures of the computer and how USB has been interfaced with it over the years. He also mentioned the role of processor in USB. The session was highly informative and enlightening.


Session on GOLD awareness and Challenges faced by women in corporate world

Ranjit R Nair, GOLD Treasurer, Kerala Section and R10 GINI coordinator enthralled the crowd with various sessions. He initiated his talk with a session on ‘Corporate World and Women’ where he pressed upon the pivotal role played by women in society. The various problems encountered by women to come up in the technical forefront were pointed out by the audience. The major achievement of this session was that, by the end, the audience themselves came up with solution for the aforesaid setbacks.In the subsequent session, he familiarised the gathering with advantages of staying with IEEE even after graduation and the various benefits enjoyed by a GOLD member.

The event did full justice to its theme and the sessions were well appreciated by the audience. The sessions also saw the crowd interacting with the speakers shedding their inhibition and thus served the intended purpose. The event was overall a great success and the response was a good encouragement to take HUB 1 WIE activities to greater heights and glory.
